Being Still

“Be still (quit striving), and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth” (Psalm 46:10 NIV & KJV).

It is a wonderful thing that our Savior is with us each day. Greater still is the fact, that He has the words that can clear our confused hearts with truth and give us real hope.  His tender attention and encouraging direction can both help us with any situation and guide us to paths that are light and life.  We just need to be still and listen.

The great difficulty … lies in the stopping, in the being still.  We are not still: we focus on keeping up with our world, striving to advance, filling our days with activities, grasping onto things we deem important, trying to possess, clamoring to compete, trying to understand, hanging on amid our struggles, and finally tidying up loose ends.  Our lives are noisy, the demands are thunderous, and stillness is often forgotten.  Much worse, is our posture toward God. We do not stop to listen to Him, and to quiet our hearts from the things on this earth to give attention to Christ and His Holy Spirit and the eternal things that will satisfy the soul. There is only one way to be still, and that is to stop with everything, right now, at this moment … change the focus, and be still, as you listen to Him. We cannot know God unless we are still before Him.

Oh, Lord, help me to stop in my day. Stop, my wandering eyes and stop my wavering thoughts. Let me be still, that I may know You. In my stillness, speak to me, show me the truth, and be my God. Come Holy Spirit, come with your still small voice. Come! In Christ’s name, Amen.
