Spirit, Breath, and Wind

And I will give you a new heart, and I will put a new spirit in you. I will take out your stony, stubborn heart and give you a tender, responsive heart (New Living Bible, Ezekiel 36:26).

In the English language, we sometimes have more than one word for something and at other times, we may have a single word that does not accurately or adequately define the complexities and nuances innate and extending from the word. The English language has three distinct words for something, some other languages generally refer to a single word. The Hebrew language has one word for Spirit, breath, and wind, ר֥וּחַ (ruach). The Greek language as well notes one word for Spirit, breath, and wind, πνεῦμα (pneuma).

There cannot be life, without God giving life through the Spirit bringing His breath to what is created. God’s very breath brought life to human beings in the Garden of Eden who were made in the image of God. Sin through the choice of Adam and Eve, corrupted that life and relationship, so God then offered new life through Christ coming again by His breath through the Spirit. The Spirit, as promised centuries before, came as a wind on Pentecost to offer a new heart and a rebirth to all people. The Spirit comes to us as the very breath of God, giving us a new heart, that is rebirthed tender, and responsive to God who again gives us life. The Spirit breathes life into the body of Christ, His church, as it directs and gifts the church, thus giving it life. God cannot be separated from created life, nor can He be separated from the new life; Christians have through Christ. The Spirit is the very breath of God and it is He who brings us each individually and together as the church: a new heart and a new life.

It is the one and only Spirit who distributes all these gifts. He alone decides which gift each person should have (New Living Bible, 1 Corinthians 12:11).
